Kusama’s Ceaseless Arc
Kusama's Faces unleashed a new identity of eternity. Something I had blocked out of my thinking emerged again. What is eternity? Or infinity? What is it to never stop or to want more of? Inspired by these concepts, I worked on motifs around loops, chaos, and order. Action, reaction, and karma. Except we did it without music. The intention was to see a painting in all its chaos and then journey one motif at a time until you see the order within it. A drummer came in and did some live drumming while the motifs were being developed. He then created an original track for each motif and expanded on it. We created this work in just four 1.5-hour rehearsal sessions, with students aged 12–16. Some had performed and danced for years, while others were exploring this style of working for the first time. Despite their varied experience, they showed immense commitment and dedication, stepping into the process as true stakeholders of the work. This year was about process and risk for me, and that was evident when the result was nowhere near what I had hoped. I learned so much about timing, teaching intention, and engaging the students while holding onto my own vision as an artist. I am so grateful I get to work as an artist here. The teacher in me loves finding areas to develop within myself in a setting where I am supported to do so. This is Kusama’s Ceaseless Arc.
